In March, the hospitality industry came together to celebrate the incredible talent and dedication of those who work in the sector at the annual People Awards dinner event. Among the evening’s standout moments was the announcement of Mateusz Skomerski, from Tinto, as Chef of the Year.

Mateusz’s recognition didn’t stop at the award ceremony. His prize included a very special experience – a trip to London for himself and his partner, Xheni Cako.

Thanks to the generosity of several sponsors, their trip was one to remember. Aurigny kindly provided return flights to Gatwick, Red Carnation Hotels treated the couple to an overnight stay in a luxurious London hotel, and the UK Craft Guild of Chefs arranged a behind-the-scenes tour of White Hart Lane, including the kitchen and media areas.

To top it all off, Mateusz was formally presented with a medal and trophy by Mark Reynolds, Chairman of the UK Craft Guild of Chefs, and Steve Scuffel, Vice President. The evening ended with a fabulous dinner at one of London’s top Indian restaurants, shared with members of the UK Craft Guild of Chefs.

Mateusz and Xheni travelled to London on 30th June and returned the next day, full of praise for the warm hospitality they received.

“Just winning the accolade in March was great,” Mateusz said. “But to have the added bonus of the trip to London was brilliant.”

Alan Sillett added, “We are delighted that Mateusz and Xheni enjoyed their trip to London. And we are truly grateful to Aurigny, Red Carnation Hotels, and the UK Craft Guild of Chefs for their support in ensuring the Chef of the Year prize was such a special one. The recognition and prizes involved should be a really good incentive for chefs throughout the island to enter the awards category next year.”

The Hospitality Association People Awards will return in March next year, offering another opportunity to shine a light on the industry’s most dedicated and talented individuals.
